Appi Kogen Ski Resort Guide 2026–2027

Today, we are taking you to Appi Kogen Ski Resort, one of the leading ski/snowboard destinations in the Tohoku region of northern Japan.

Appi Kogen was named Japan’s Best Ski Resort at the 2023 World Ski Awards. Located in northern Honshu, the resort offers terrains for skiers and snowboarders of all ability levels, along with high-quality accommodations and excellent facilities for children.

Families will find dedicated children’s ski areas, a snow park, childcare services, and ski & snowboard schools. Since 2023, elementary school students and younger children have also been eligible for free lift tickets under the resort’s child lift-pass program. Like Furano and Tomamu in Hokkaido, Appi Kogen is an excellent choice for a family ski vacation.

Appi is known for its groomed trails, off-piste area, designated tree-run zones, terrain parks, and a longest continuous run of approximately 5.5 kilometers, or 3.4 miles.

Because Appi Kogen is located in northern Honshu, it generally receives colder and drier winter conditions than many ski resorts farther south. This helps produce the light powder snow for which the resort is known.

Like Rusutsu, Appi Kogen works especially well for travelers who are comfortable having most of their meals and entertainment within the resort. However, if you are looking for the nightlife, independent restaurants, and walkable village atmosphere found in Niseko or Hakuba, Appi may feel relatively quiet.

Appi Kogen can offer excellent knee-deep powder on snowy days. This photo was taken in early March.

Appi Kogen 2026–2027 Opening Date

Appi Kogen is currently scheduled to open for the 2026–2027 winter season on December 5, 2026.

The number of open trails and operating lifts will depend on snowfall, weather, and mountain conditions. Always check the official Appi Kogen trail and lift information before traveling.

What Is the Snow Like at Appi Kogen?

One of Appi Kogen’s biggest attractions is its dry powder snow.

Because inland Iwate Prefecture experiences consistently cold winter temperatures, the snow often contains relatively little moisture. Appi markets its signature snow as “APPI Powder” or “Aspirin Snow.”

Under favorable conditions, the snow can feel exceptionally light and soft, making it enjoyable for both skiers and snowboarders who want to experience Japan powder snow, AKA JaPow.

If powder is the main focus of your trip, January and February generally offer the best chance of fresh snowfall. However, snow quality always depends on the temperature, wind, and recent weather, so powder conditions cannot be guaranteed every day.

Appi Kogen is located in northern Honshu, where consistently cold temperatures contribute to a long ski season and excellent snow quality.
One of the best things about Appi Kogen is that it rarely feels crowded—you often get that “Wow, it feels like we have the whole mountain to ourselves!” feeling.

What Is It Like to Ski or Snowboard at Appi Kogen?

Appi Kogen is very well laid out, and I find it an easy and comfortable resort to explore.

If you are traveling with children or learning to ski for the first time, you will find many of the easier trails and children’s facilities close to the main hotel area. The kids’ snow park and beginner slopes are only a short walk from the resort accommodations, making mornings much easier when you are carrying equipment or getting the whole family ready.

Once you are comfortable on narrower connecting trails, you can take the gondola toward the upper mountain and ski down the Yamabato Course as part of Appi’s longest 5.5-kilometer route. It is a lovely long run, but snowboarders should be aware that some sections are quite flat. Try to maintain your speed, or you may end up unstrapping and walking.

Personally, tree skiing is one of my favorite things about Appi. I enjoy it so much that I could happily spend the entire day exploring the designated tree-run zones—and I’m sure you will love it too!

Safety note: Only enter designated tree-run areas when they are officially open. Natural terrain may contain deep snow, tree wells, hidden obstacles, and rapidly changing visibility. If you are not experienced in powder or tree skiing, always go with a qualified guide—never follow other riders into unfamiliar terrain.

From the Nishimori area, you may also be able to see Mt. Iwate across the valley. It reminds me of looking toward Mt. Yotei from Niseko’s Hirafu area.

Appi Kogen also has a well-maintained terrain park associated with Yasuhiro Sato, the coach of Olympic snowboard champion Su Yiming.

With its long groomed trails, powder terrain, and managed tree-run zones, Appi has become one of my favorite ski resorts on Honshu—and it is a resort I would happily return to.

This was one of the rare moments during our five-day trip when it wasn’t snowing, and we could finally see the mountains across the valley clearly.

Who Is Appi Kogen Best For?

Appi Kogen is particularly suitable for:

  • Skiers and snowboarders looking for dry powder snow in northern Japan
  • Intermediate skiers who enjoy long cruising runs
  • Families who want to stay close to the slopes
  • Groups containing skiers of different ability levels
  • Travelers who want to combine skiing, hot springs, and resort accommodations
  • Visitors hoping to avoid some of the crowds found at major Hokkaido resorts
  • Beginner, intermediate, and advanced skiers and snowboarders

Appi Kogen is less suitable for travelers whose main priorities are nightlife, independent bars, and a large walkable resort village.

Unlike Niseko or Hakuba, most accommodations, restaurants, and activities at Appi are concentrated within the resort and hotel complex. This makes the experience convenient, but relatively self-contained.

Is Appi Kogen Worth Visiting if You Do Not Ski?

Yes. Nonskiers can still enjoy hot springs, resort dining, and a variety of seasonal snow activities.

Depending on the season, activities may include:

  • Snowshoe tours
  • Snow photography services
  • Family snow-play areas
  • Limited-time seasonal events

Appi Kogen puts more effort into nonskiing entertainment than many traditional Japanese ski resorts.

In previous seasons, Christmas activities have included Santa-themed events and holiday cake experiences. New Year celebrations have featured mountaintop prayers, traditional ema wish plaques, countdown events, and fireworks.

The resort has also organized Hello Kitty collaborations with themed photo locations and limited-edition merchandise.

Programs and events change each season, so check the latest schedule before planning your trip around a particular activity.

How to Get to Appi Kogen Ski Resort

The following are the most common ways to reach Appi Kogen.

By Train

From Tokyo, take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Morioka Station. The journey takes approximately two hours and 10 minutes.

From Morioka, you can either:

  • Take the JR Hanawa Line to Appi-Kogen Station and transfer to a local resort shuttle; or
  • Take a seasonal reservation-based shuttle bus directly from Morioka Station to the resort.

Train and shuttle schedules vary, so leave enough time between connections.

By Air

Iwate Hanamaki Airport is one of the closest airports to Appi Kogen. Because it is a relatively small regional airport, international visitors may need to connect through a major Japanese airport before taking a domestic flight.

Ground transportation from Hanamaki Airport to Appi Kogen generally takes around 90 minutes, depending on the service and road conditions.

Seasonal buses are also available from Sendai International Airport. The direct journey takes approximately three hours and 15 minutes to three hours and 30 minutes.

By Car

Driving from central Morioka to Appi Kogen generally takes about one hour under normal conditions.

Winter driving in Iwate can involve heavy snowfall, icy roads, and low visibility. A vehicle with winter tires is essential, and four-wheel drive is preferable when severe conditions are expected.

How to Get to Appi Kogen from Hong Kong

Travelers from Hong Kong commonly reach Appi Kogen through either Sendai or Tokyo.

Option 1: Fly from Hong Kong to Sendai

Direct flights between Hong Kong and Sendai make Appi Kogen considerably easier to reach and reduce the number of transfers required.

For the 2026–2027 winter season, the resort has announced a reservation-based shuttle service between Sendai Airport and Appi Kogen. The one-way journey takes approximately three hours and 15 minutes.

The shuttle does not necessarily operate every day or meet every flight, so compare the flight and bus schedules before booking. Advance reservations are required.

Option 2: Travel Through Tokyo and Morioka

If flights to Tokyo offer better schedules or prices, take the Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Morioka and transfer to a reservation-based shuttle bus for Appi Kogen.

This route generally provides more flight options and allows you to spend a night in Tokyo. However, it involves more transfers.

Families traveling with young children or passengers carrying several pieces of ski equipment should allow plenty of time between connections.

Option 3: Travel Through Another Tohoku Airport

Depending on your flight schedule, you may also reach Appi Kogen through Hanamaki, Aomori, or Odate-Noshiro Airport.

Official 2026–2027 winter shuttle routes include:

  • Sendai Airport to Appi Kogen
  • Iwate Hanamaki Airport to Appi Kogen
  • Aomori Airport to Appi Kogen
  • Odate-Noshiro Airport to Appi Kogen
  • Morioka Station to Appi Kogen

Not every route operates daily, and reservations may close several days before departure. Always check the current winter transportation schedule before finalizing your flights.

Where to Stay at Appi Kogen

From the hotel window, you can see Appi’s beginner area and get a general idea of the trail conditions. You can also see just how close the hotel is to the slopes!

Appi Kogen is a large destination resort with several major hotels located close to the slopes. The main resort hotels are operated under IHG brands.

ANA InterContinental Appi Kogen Resort

Opened in February 2022, ANA InterContinental Appi Kogen Resort is the most luxurious accommodation at Appi.

The property offers hot springs, a sauna, upscale dining, and ski-in, ski-out convenience. Instead of waiting at a traditional reception counter, guests can complete the check-in process while seated as a staff member provides a personalized introduction to the hotel.

The resort has only 38 guest rooms, creating a quieter and more exclusive atmosphere. It has received recognition from the World Luxury Hotel Awards and has also been selected as a Michelin Key hotel.

It is best suited for:

  • Honeymoons and anniversary trips
  • Travelers who prioritize accommodation quality
  • Couples looking for a quiet, private atmosphere
  • Skiers with a more generous travel budget

ANA Crowne Plaza Resort Appi Kogen

ANA Crowne Plaza Resort Appi Kogen occupies the former Appi Grand Hotel buildings and tower.

The hotel is located directly beside the ski center and provides convenient access to the slopes. It is generally more affordable than the InterContinental while still offering a comfortable resort experience.

A wide selection of room types is available, making it convenient for couples, families, and groups. Guests also have easy access to restaurants, the equipment rental center, and other resort facilities.

It is best suited for:

  • Families with children
  • Groups of friends
  • First-time visitors to Appi Kogen
  • Travelers who want to stay close to the slopes and restaurants

ANA Holiday Inn Resort Appi Kogen

ANA Holiday Inn Resort Appi Kogen has traditionally operated during the winter season.

Guests can ski back toward the hotel, but reaching the main ski area may require walking uphill or taking the resort shuttle to the ski center. Many visitors therefore use the shuttle in the morning.

Operating dates and available buildings may change, so confirm the latest hotel status before booking.

Other Accommodations Near Appi Kogen

Travelers who prefer not to stay inside the main resort can consider accommodations in the surrounding Appi, Hachimantai, or Morioka areas.

Options recommended by previous guests include:

Appikogen Pension Mutti

This small pension is known for its friendly owner, generous breakfast, and daily transportation to the ski area.

Apikogen Mori no Hotel

Guests often compliment the welcoming staff, food, and outdoor hot spring.

Staying outside the resort may provide a quieter or more personal experience, but check transportation arrangements carefully if you are not renting a car.

Hot Springs at Appi Kogen

Shirakaba-no-Yu is a large hot-spring facility at Appi Kogen with both indoor and outdoor bathing areas.

The outdoor section features wooden pavilion-style baths surrounded by the winter landscape. Facilities may also include a large communal bath, rock bath, reclining bath, and individual pot baths.

Shirakaba-no-Yu is connected to the hot-spring building near ANA Holiday Inn Resort Appi Kogen. Guests staying at ANA Crowne Plaza may need to use the resort shuttle to reach it.

There are also restaurants within the hot-spring complex, making it convenient to have dinner after your bath.

Always review current bathing rules, operating hours, and transportation arrangements before visiting.

Where to Eat at Appi Kogen

The dining at Appi Kogen’s hotels is excellent by ski-resort standards. Perhaps thanks to the colder northern climate and high-quality regional ingredients, both the meat and seafood are especially rich and delicious!

The Appi Kogen hotel and resort complex offers more than 15 dining options, although the exact number of operating restaurants varies by season and date.

My personal recommendations include the selected Tohoku beef yakiniku and sushi prepared with seasonal seafood.

Popular restaurants can fill up quickly during Christmas, New Year, Lunar New Year, and Japanese holiday periods. Make reservations in advance whenever possible.

Travelers with allergies, vegetarian diets, or other dietary requirements should contact the restaurant or hotel before arriving.

Attractions Near Appi Kogen

If you would like to take a day away from skiing, consider traveling to Morioka.

Places to visit in the city include:

  • Bank of Iwate Red Brick Building
  • Morioka Hachimangu Shrine
  • Sakurayama Shrine near the Morioka Castle ruins
  • Takuboku and Kenji Museum

Check seasonal transportation schedules before planning a day trip, especially if you are not driving.
