FAQs

Here are some frequently asked questions relating to Ski/Snowboard instructor training course in New Zealand.

Can complete beginners apply for the Level 1 instructor course?

If you are a complete beginner, we do not recommend signing up directly for the NZSIA Level 1 exam.

You are expected to be able to perform parallel turns on blue and red terrain before taking the exam, which is why we offer Level 1 preparation training courses.

To join the Level 1 training course, you should at least be able to ski down intermediate terrain in New Zealand.

(There is a big difference between simply getting down the slope and skiing down with proper parallel turns. If you are unsure of the difference, feel free to send us a skiing video for assessment.)

What is the difference between NZSIA and CSIA?

Both are internationally recognized ISIA ski instructor systems, and both can be used to apply for ski instructor visas in Japan.

The main differences are:

  • While the CSIA system is structured from Level 1 through 4, the NZSIA follows a similar four-tier progression, designated as Level 1, 2, 3, and Trainer Level.
  • NZSIA Level 1 includes a formal assessment component, while CSIA Level 1 is based more on continuous evaluation without a separate exam scoring section
  • CSIA has a longer history than NZSIA

But at the end of the day:

“Good skiing is good skiing.”

Many instructors eventually:

  • Learn from multiple teaching systems
  • Hold certifications from different organizations simultaneously

Can NZSIA/SBNIZ (New Zealand instructor) courses and training be taught in Chinese?

The NZSIA exam in New Zealand is all in English.

However, training courses are designed in part to help non-native English speakers prepare for the English-based exam.

If your English is not very strong, we highly recommend joining a training course before taking the exam.

Note: When there is special request cases the Level 1 can be done in Mandarin, and you would get a NZSIA Level 1 Mandarin qualification.

Do I need to speak English fluently to join ski/snowboard training in New Zealand?

For the exam, you do not need perfect English, but you do need to be able to communicate at a basic level.

This is another reason why we recommend training courses for students who are not fluent in English.

It gives you more time to learn the English terminology and communication required for the exam.

If your English is extremely limited, we recommend joining with a friend who is willing to help translate for you to maximize the learning experience.

Many Asian students do not start with strong English skills, but because they train every day in an English-speaking environment, their English improves quickly over the course of the month.

By the end of the program, many students are able to communicate well enough to pass the exam.

Which is better for ski instructor training: Queenstown or Wanaka?

Both are extremely popular.

Queenstown (Coronet Peak and The Remarkables)

Great for:

  • First-time visitors to New Zealand
  • Students who cannot drive (there are buses from town directly to the ski resorts)
  • People who enjoy lively town life
  • Café culture, nightlife, and an international atmosphere
  • Social and outgoing personalities

Wanaka (Treble Cone and Cardrona)

Better for:

  • People who prefer a quieter mountain town
  • Freeride and technical skiing
  • Students who can drive themselves

Many instructors have spent time in both locations.

What equipment do I need for ski instructor training in New Zealand?

You will generally need:

  • Skis
  • Ski boots
  • Helmet
  • Goggles
  • Ski wear
  • Gloves
  • Mid layers
  • Base layers

If you do not have complete equipment, many students initially choose:

  • Local rentals
  • Season rentals

We can also provide equipment recommendations.

Does the ski/snowboard training course include accommodation?

This depends on the course package.

Some packages include:

  • Accommodation
  • Transportation
  • Lift passes
  • Training fees
  • Exam fees

Others only include training fees.

Accommodation in Queenstown becomes very limited during peak season, so early booking is highly recommended.

Can I teach in Japan after passing NZSIA Level 1?

Yes.

NZSIA Level 1 is one of the qualifications that can be used to apply for a ski instructor visa in Japan.

Many Asian instructors:

Train in New Zealand during the Southern Hemisphere winter
Work in Japan during the Northern Hemisphere winter

Especially in places such as:

  • Hokkaido
  • Hakuba
  • Nozawa Onsen
  • Myoko

You will find many instructors with NZSIA backgrounds.

However, actual employment still depends on:

  • Work visa eligibility
  • Ski school hiring
  • Language ability
  • Teaching ability

Can snowboarders transition into ski instructors?

Yes — and it is actually very common.

Many snowboarders eventually:

  • Develop skiing skills
  • Take the Ski Level 1 certification
  • Become dual-certified in both skiing and snowboarding

Dual-certified instructors are highly valued by many ski schools. However, snowboarders transitioning into skiing often struggle with leaning too far back at first. So, please be prepared well before joining the exam!

What age is suitable to start?

There is no strict age limit.

Most students are typically 18 years old or above.

We regularly see:

  • University students
  • Working professionals
  • 30+ career changers
  • 40+ ski enthusiasts

What truly matters is:

  • Passion for skiing
  • Willingness to continue training
  • The desire to improve

—not your age.
