  • More Than Just a Family & Beginner Ski Resort:
Tomamu isn’t only perfect for families and beginners. It offers advanced slopes and challenging terrain, including black trails for experienced skiers. The resort’s freestyle park is highly regarded and suitable for freestyle and snowboard enthusiasts of all levels.
  • Excellent Snow Conditions:
The snow here is typically light and dry, ideal for skiing and snowboarding, even though snowfall is slightly less than in coastal resorts like Niseko or Rusutsu. Thanks to snowmaking machines, key slopes are well-covered throughout the season, which usually runs from December 1st.
  • Wide Range of Activities:
Beyond skiing, enjoy the indoor Smile Beach / Mina Mina Beach with artificial waves, snow karting, ice sliding, small flat terrain with beginner-friendly features for kids, scenic gondola rides, and more.
  • Prime Location for Day Trips & Multi-Day Stays:
Only 60 minutes from Furano, making it an excellent base for exploring multiple ski resorts in central Hokkaido.

Tomamu features two main ski areas: Tomamu Mountain and Tower Mountain.

  • Tower Mountain:
Known for its beginner and intermediate slopes, perfect for families and ski newcomers. It houses the Nipo Chair, one of Japan’s few lifts allow snowboard to board this chair while holding the snowboard with they hands (no one leg riding) — a major convenience for snowboarders learning to ride chairlifts. (Remember to hold onto your board and avoid it slipping off!)
  • Tomamu Mountain:
Larger and higher, offering more challenging slopes (off pistes as well), a terrain park, and gondola lifts. It’s ideal for advanced skiers and freestyle snowboarders, with a variety of slopes suitable for all skill levels.

Rental Gear:
Gear can be rented at both Hoshino Resorts Tomamu The Tower and Risonare Tomamu. During peak season, it’s best to reserve in advance.

Snow Quality in Tomamu, Hokkaido

Although snowfall is less than in Niseko or Rusutsu, Tomamu and Furano benefits from its central location in Hokkaido—often experiencing very cold temperatures. This results in light, dry powder snow, perfect for skiing and snowboarding. Snowmakers also ensure good snow coverage on the main slopes throughout the season.

Tips to Maximize Your Lessons

Choose Certified Instructors: Always opt for instructors with internationally recognized certifications, preferably at least Level 2. This ensures you receive quality coaching and proper guidance.

Avoid Teaching Partners or Friends: Teaching your partner or close friend can lead to misunderstandings or arguments—it’s best to rely on a professional instructor for your learning experience.

Know Your Instructor’s Style: If you’re taking advanced lessons, make sure you like your instructor’s skiing or snowboarding style. Learning from someone whose technique you admire will enhance your progress.

Communicate Openly: Clear communication is essential. If you’re feeling tired, confused, or not understanding something, let your instructor know right away—I’m here to help!

Check Your Gear: If you’re a beginner, have your instructor inspect your equipment. Wearing the right gear is critical for safety and proper learning.

Utilize Helpful Tools: Use tools like a snowboard size calculator and a ski length calculator. Simply input your height, weight, and skill level to find the ideal board or ski length for you.

Get Gear That Fits: Your ski boots should fit snugly, with your toes just touching the front. Need help? Check out our guides on choosing snowboard boots and finding the perfect ski boots for wider feet.

Prioritize Safety: Snowboarders, don’t forget to gear up with protective equipment. Safety always comes first!

Practice Balance: Skiers, try practicing standing on one leg before your lesson. It’s a simple exercise that significantly improves your balance on the slopes.

Warm Up & Stretch: Warm up your muscles before your lesson and spend 15 minutes stretching afterward to prevent injuries and stay comfortable all day.

Hoshino Resort Tomamu – Dinning Options

The dining options at Hoshino Resorts in Tomamu are so abundant that you could dine here for several days without running out of new options! The quality of the restaurants is generally very high. Here are some of my personal favorite spots:

Soup Curry (Warm Japanese Curry)

In Tower mountain area, Hatalu street

Their soup curry shop on Hatalu Street, GARAKU, is truly excellent! They offer a variety of flavors, including options for meat lovers. Their pork belly is so tender it practically melts in your mouth. You might even find yourself humming the song, “There’s the best pork belly, the best pork belly,” as you enjoy your meal!

Resort Center (Gondola Station) Food Court – Nepalese Curry

Bistarai Bistarai is a great choice. Their naan bread is soft, fragrant, and oozing with cheese — perfect for a satisfying lunch to recharge your energy!

Seafood Ramen

Another favorite lunch spot I enjoy during skiing is Takezo Ramen on Hotalu Street. Their shrimp broth is fantastic — it completely captivated seafood lovers like me. My students prefer the chicken white broth, which is lighter but still very tasty!

Burgers and Fries

Another restaurant I love is Tukino Cafe & Bar, also located on Hotalu Street. Their burgers are described perfectly as “bursting with juice”! The fries are super crispy — even after sitting for a while. Their ice cream is delicious too. Whenever I need to upload a lot of photos and videos, I often spend half the day here because their WiFi is really fast and strong!

Accommodation

Most guests stay at hotels inside the resort:

The Tower is the more popular hotel choice, while Risonare is more upscale. Both hotels offer convenient shuttle services within the resort to access other facilities. They are both ski-in, ski-out, with Risonare situated slightly higher on the mountain.

Here’s a photo of the crowd waiting for shuttle buses at the hotel. The day before, bus and train services were suspended due to heavy snow, so many guests were stuck inside the hotel. But those lines cleared quickly the next day, which was impressive!
