Planning to ski or snowboard at an indoor ski resort in China like Shenzhen Huafa, Shenzhen Karoo, or Guangzhou Sunac Snow World?
Many visitors assume indoor ski slopes are “not that cold.”
They’re wrong.
Halfway through their session, they’re freezing — numb hands, cold feet, sore throat — and their ski day ends early.
I’m Lorraine, a CSIA Level 3 ski instructor and trainer with 7+ years of teaching experience at indoor ski resorts in China. I run a ski and snowboard school based in Shenzhen Huafa, so we have been based in Huafa since day 1. This guide explains exactly what you need to stay warm, dry, and comfortable.
Are Indoor Ski Resorts in China Cold?
Yes — very.
Most indoor slopes in Shenzhen and Guangzhou operate at –5°C to –10°C (23°F–14°F). The snow is real, the temperature is real, and poor clothing choices lead to:
- Cold hands
- Wet base layers
- Rapid body heat loss
- Shortened ski/snowboard sessions
What’s Included With Indoor Ski Tickets?
Most tickets include:
✔ Helmet
✔ Jacket
✔ Snow pants
✔ Boots
✔ Snowboard or skis + poles
You do NOT need to bring outerwear or skis.
But personal gear and base layers are essential.
6 Essential Items You MUST Bring
1. Waterproof Ski Gloves (Most Important)
Waterproof gloves matter more than thickness when you’re skiing. Snowboarders touch the snow more often than skiers, so if you choose snowboarding, it’s even more important to get a good pair of waterproof gloves.
Wet gloves → cold hands → body chills.
Look for:
- Waterproof membrane
- Insulation
- Wrist straps
- Small pocket for heat packs
💡 Pro tip: Wear liner gloves underneath. They absorb sweat and can be swapped during the session.
2. Face Mask / Neck Warmer
Indoor skiing still exposes you to cold air.
Benefits:
- Keeps face warm
- Blocks cold airflow
- Reduces throat irritation
- Helps protect skin
3. Ski / Snowboard Socks
If you don’t own ski socks, long socks can work.
- Thin socks = better boot control
- Cold feet? Use toe warmers
- Extremely cold? Electric heated insoles
4. Mid Layer (Insulating Layer)
Worn between base layer and ski jacket.
Best materials:
- Fleece
- Light down
- Synthetic insulated tops
Bring one — you can store it if too warm.
5. Base Layer (The Most Important Layer)
Warmth is not about thickness.
Choose:
✔ Moisture-wicking
✔ Breathable
✔ Quick-dry
Indoor slopes have warm and cold zones:
Sweat in warm zone → enter cold slope → you freeze.
Wet fabric pulls heat from the body quickly.
6. Goggles
Previously optional in some Chinese indoor slopes — now strongly recommended, especially in Shenzhen Huafa, coz it’s really cold!!!.
Goggles help:
- Protect eyes from cold air
- Block wind
- Increase comfort
- Improve safety
🔎 Look for Asian Fit models if you have a low nose bridge.
❌ Common Beginner Mistakes
Avoid:
- Cotton base layers
- No gloves
- Thin non-ski socks
- No mid-layer
These cause most early session dropouts.
✅ Quick Packing Checklist
✔ Waterproof ski gloves
✔ inner gloves
✔ Face mask / neck warmer
✔ Ski / Snowboard socks
